How is the wind season in Progreso,Yucatan?
Progreso is the place with the greatest amount of wind in its different variations throughout the year within Mexico. The seasons are divided as follows:
February to May
This is the best time of the year for wind sports with thermal winds.
In the morning between 8am and 11am the wind speed is approximately 15 to 25 knots from the southeast direction. When the wind blows from the south in Progreso, kitesurfing is practiced in the mangrove swamp and the most common spot is the “Paradero Ecoturístico Ría de Chelem”.
In the afternoons between 1pm and 7pm the wind speed is approximately 15 to 25 knots with a northeast direction. When the wind blows north in Progreso, kitesurfing is practiced on the coast of Progreso and the most common spot is the Yucalpetén beach. There are excellent conditions almost daily and there is no presence of rain or storms.
June to October
Thermal winds and storms.
In the afternoons between 11 pm and 7 pm the wind speed is approximately 12 to 20 knots with a northeasterly direction. In these months the rainy and squall season begins, so some days there are only 2 to 3 hours of wind. It’s also hurricane season, which is why there are storms with wind speeds of between 20 and 45 knots. You can kite almost every day if you have different sizes of equipment and start your sessions at the correct times.
November to January
Thermal and north winds.
In the afternoon between 11 pm and 7 pm the wind speed is approximately 10 to 15 knots from the northeast direction. It is common to receive cold fronts better known as “nortes” which average between 20 and 45 knots and last between 2 and 3 days, they can occur at any time or hour but can easily be predicted with the help of wind reports. During this time it is recommended to have a neoprene suit between 1 and 2 millimeters.
Who can learn kitesurfing?
Almost anyone can learn or practice kitesurfing.
Age: From 8 years onwards.
Physical Condition: No level of physical condition is required but people with existing injuries, especially to the back, should consult a doctor.
Ability to swim: Knowing how to swim is important, although there is always the option of wearing a life jacket.
Willingness to learn: This is the most important thing since it can be an intimidating sport at times and requires consistency and technique. In all our years of experience teaching people we have never met someone who has the right desire and will and has not managed to become an independent kiter.
Do I need strength to learn kitesurfing?
No leg or arm strength is needed since you use a harness that absorbs the power of the kite and by counterweight you can handle the power of the kite. It takes time, patience, technique and a lot of desire.
Can I lose control or “fly away”?
Almost impossible. Kites are very safe today and have multiple safety systems that allow them to be deactivated and even let go at any time with no effort.
How many hours of lessons are necessary to learn kitesurfing?
It depends from person to person but generally between 10 and 15 hours of lessons are enough.
How are the kitesurfing courses structured?
All kitesurfing and safety equipment is provided by Intropic. The student is to bring only what they would use on an active day on the water.
The courses have a range of 9 to 12 hours.
Lessons are divided into sessions of 3 to 2 hours per day and days are assigned according to the availability of the student and the weather conditions.
